Step 1—Test the lid switch

The first step in our guide for how to fix a Samsung washing machine not spinning is to check the lid switch.

Your washing machine has a lid switch to ensure the lid is properly closed when the machine is turned on. If the switch becomes defective, it won’t be able to correctly tell the control board if the door is closed or not, which will cause your appliance to stop the cycle.

To test the lid switch you need to locate it, disconnect it, and then use multiple to check if it has continuity. If the switch doesn’t have continuity, it will need to be replaced.

If the switch does have continuity, it’s not faulty, so you can reconnect it and move on to the next step.

Step 2—Test the door latch

If the lid switch is working correctly, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the door latch. Some washing machines have electronic door latches and others have manual ones.

If you have an electronic switch, you need to test it with a multimeter for continuity. If you have a manual one, you can check if the door connects properly with the washing machine when you close the door. If you find the latch is faulty, it will need to be replaced.

Step 3—Check the drive belt

If the door latch is working properly, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the drive belt. The drive belt helps your washing machine to rotate during the washing cycle. If it becomes misaligned your washing machine will not be able to spin correctly.

To check the drive belt, you need to remove the top and side panels of your appliance so you can locate the belt. Once you locate the belt, you need to inspect it to make sure it isn’t misaligned or damaged. If damaged or misaligned, it will need to be repaired and if that isn’t possible, replaced.

Step 4—Check the motor coupling

If the drive belt isn’t damaged, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the motor coupling. The motor coupling connects the motor in your washer to the transmission. If it becomes defective, your Samsung washer will not spin.

To check the motor coupling, you need to remove the top and side panels of your appliance so you can access it. Once you locate the motor coupling, inspect it to make sure it isn’t damaged. If damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Step 5—Check the clutch

If the motor coupling isn’t damaged, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the clutch. The clutch helps the washer drum spin around, so if it’s faulty, the washer won’t be able to spin.

To check the clutch, turn your washing machine on to a spin cycle and once it starts up, check if the spin speed increases properly. It should speed up intermittently. If it doesn’t increase in speed, this is a good indication that it is damaged and will need to be replaced.

Step 6—Check the rotor

If the clutch isn’t damaged, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the rotor. The rotor is another component that helps the drum spin.

To check the motor rotor, you need to remove the top and side panels of your appliance so you can access it. Once you locate the rotor, you need to inspect it to make sure it isn’t damaged. Pay special attention to the magnets on the rotor. If damaged in any way, it will need to be replaced.

Step 7—Test the drive motor

If the rotor isn’t damaged, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, the next component to check is the drive motor. If the drive motor isn’t working, your Samsung washing machine will not spin.

To test the drive motor, you need to locate it, disconnect it, and then use multiple to check if it has continuity. If the motor doesn’t have continuity, it will need to be replaced. If the motor does have continuity, it’s not faulty, so you can reconnect it and move on to the next step.

Step 8—Replace the main control board

If the drive motor is working properly, or if replacing it hasn’t fixed your washing machine, your final option is to replace the main control board. The main control board is like the brains of your washing machine, so if it becomes defective, your washing machine won’t be able to function correctly.

Before replacing the main control board, consider getting a technician to inspect your washing machine to see if they can repair it.
