Should You Cover Your Outdoor AC Unit in the Fall?

Wondering whether you should cover your outdoor AC unit this fall? Here’s what you need to know.

Wondering whether you should cover your outdoor AC unit this fall? It's a common question among homeowners in Southern California, especially with falling leaves and occasional rain. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Some Homeowners Consider Covering Their AC

Leaves, dust, and debris can accumulate around the outdoor condenser unit during the fall. This can restrict airflow and lead to corrosion over time. Covering the unit might seem like a logical step to protect it from the elements, especially for those living near trees or landscaping that sheds heavily.

When It’s Not Necessary

Modern outdoor AC units are designed to withstand weather conditions. Their components are built to handle rain, wind, and falling leaves. In Southern California, where extreme weather is rare, fully covering the unit is usually unnecessary and in some cases, it can actually trap moisture and promote mold or rust.

What You Should Do Instead

Rather than covering the entire unit, consider a breathable top cover to prevent large debris from falling in. Clear away leaves and branches around the unit regularly and make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance for proper airflow.

What to Avoid

Never use plastic or fully sealed covers that trap moisture. These covers can do more harm than good. Also, avoid stacking items on top of the unit during the off-season it can damage the fins or disrupt the alignment of internal components.

Should You Cover Your Unit at All?

If your unit is located under trees or in an exposed area, a light, breathable top cover may be helpful. Otherwise, simple cleaning and maintenance may be all you need. In general, don’t worry about full coverage in our mild Southern California fall climate.
